This guide is designed to walk you through the early steps of your journey, helping you master the basics and chart a course for greatness.
In Age of Empires Mobile, you’ll build, expand, and battle your way through the ages, from the dawn of civilization to the powerful Imperial Age and beyond. Along the way, you’ll unlock legendary heroes, recruit vast armies, and join forces with other players as you aim to dominate the world stage.
Whether you're a beginner or a returning player, this guide will provide you with everything you need to establish your empire and rise through the ranks. We’ll cover the essential steps to ensure your success.
Prepare yourself for the challenges ahead as you build your empire, command your forces, and lead your people to glory. The road to becoming a legendary ruler begins now!
Follow the first steps given by the game until you have access to your magnificent citadel and a whole lot of menus appear.
Let us first see what they represent and navigate through some of them before going any further.
Head to your profile in the top left corner of your screen to find valuable information related to your account. You will be able to switch civilizations, change your in-game name, refill your stamina as well as see more detailed information regarding your military power. You can also access settings through your profile. Let’s use this opportunity to rename ourselves… “Munir” should be a good hero name.
Finally, let us head into the settings menu to find our last piece of valuable tools that you may need throughout your in-game progression. This is where you will be able to bind your account to your Google or Facebook accounts, create new characters in other kingdoms, and most of all where you will be able to access our customer service to report any issue you may encounter.
Now that you have been familiarized with these basic yet important menus, we can dive in and start our journey into Age of Empires Mobile with more ease. Let us follow the storyline quests as they will guide us through the most important features of the game.
The first Chapter of the main storyline gives us a few things to focus on. Let’s start by upgrading our hero Joséphine: head to the Heroes tab and click on the “+” icon close to Joséphine’s experience bar as shown below.
Upgrade her to Lv. 5 as pictured above and like the quest suggests you to do.
Next comes Island Tactics, an in-game expedition where your troops are put to the test through a series of 900 challenges. Beating a level gives a completion reward and increases your passive production of the Island Tactics’ exclusive currency: Tactic Coins. You can later spend these coins in this gamemode’s specific store to earn various materials and rewards linked to our Forge and Gear system.
If you struggle while trying to beat an Island Tactics level, try to position your troops using the unit counter wheel to get a significant advantage over your enemies. You could also try different cards. If you really can’t beat the level, then level up your heroes, upgrade their skills, and try again later! Here’s an example below of good unit positioning:
Now that you’ve progressed in the Island Tactics’ gamemode, we still need to upgrade one of our Houses to Lv. 4 to complete the first Chapter. Let us use this opportunity to list every building your Citadel will be able to hold, find out the benefits you gain from upgrading them as well as a few tips on which ones to prioritize upgrading.

Upgrading the warehouse increases the protection limit of all resources. Unlocks at Town Center Lv.4. |
It is not mandatory to upgrade your warehouse if you can learn to manage your resources enough to not hold on too many resources.
Just like classic Age of Empires games, resources are made to be spent! |

The tavern is a unique building where you can recruit heroes to fight and command in your armies. You get free pulls at the tavern every day.
Upgrading the tavern increases the level cap of all heroes and reduces the free recruitment cooldown available in this building. |
Very important building to upgrade. Upgrade it as your town center ranks up whenever you can. A shorter free recruitment timer means more heroes in your team.
The tavern also allows you to upgrade your heroes more as it levels up, which will be very useful on the battlefield.
The market is a unique building that acts as your trading center : you can exchange one type of resource for another. It is also the place where the Wandering Merchant travels for business. Look out for her!
Upgrading the market increases the daily exchange limit as well as the exchange rate. Unlocks at Town Center Lv.6. |
The market should be upgraded to meet the requirements for your town center’s upgrades, nothing more.

The university is a unique building where you can start researching technologies for powerful military and economic boosts.
Upgrading the university unlocks more technologies and increases the overall research speed of your Citadel. |
It is very important to keep the university’s level as high as possible whenever you upgrade your town center.
You need the additional research speed and the newly unlocked technologies.
The hospital is a unique building where your wounded troops can be healed. Pay attention to the hospital capacity, as too many troops in its walls will result in deaths.
Upgrading the hospital increases the number of wounded troops it can hold and its healing speed. Unlocks at Town Center Lv.2. |
Important building to upgrade, especially if you often wage war. If your university, tavern and embassy are up-to-date level-wise, you can prioritize this building.
You also can activate an auto-heal option in the hospital menu which can be useful early on.
The swordsmen barracks is a unique building where you can train swordsman units.

The Chapter 2 quests are not too hard to do, but they will give us the opportunity to talk about villagers and their management menu. Click on the villager count at the top of your Citadel’s menu to access the following tab.
Don’t forget to assign villagers to your lumber camps and to upgrade one mill and one lumber camp to Lv.4 to complete Chapter 2. Keep your villagers busy and always assign them to production buildings. No idle villagers allowed!
With that done, you now know how to manage your villagers. En route to Chapter 3.
Chapter 3 will introduce us to units training and heroes’ signature skills. Let us dive into these two tasks and explain them further.
To train units, select one of the military barracks we mentioned earlier. In our case, let us select the swordsmen barracks and choose “Train” in the menu that opens.
Train as many units as you can for this Chapter’s task. Don't forget to always recruit troops in all of your barracks whenever you can. Just like forums from classic Age of Empires games where you want to reach little to no idle time regarding villagers production, we want our military buildings to train soldiers full time as much as possible.
For the next quest involving signature skills, head to the Heroes’ tab and select Joséphine.
Let us dissect this hero menu together to better understand it.
Hero stats increase passively when leveling up. They can also be increased through the hero talents tree. There are 4 main stats:
- Might: increases the might attack of units in your troop as well as the effects of skills with might bonus.
- Armor: increases the might defense of units in your troop as well as the effects of skills with might bonus.
- Strategy: increases the strategy attack and defense of units in your troop as well as the effects of skills with strategy bonus.
- Siege: increases the siege damage of your troop. Siege damage only affects buildings' durability.
Leveling up Joséphine isn’t the only way to make her stronger. You can also rank her up using extra legendary medals, either exclusive Joséphine or universal ones.
Ranks are divided in 5 stars, each of them divided in 5 shards. Here are the total required medals for each rank:
- Unlock hero = 10 medals ;
- Rank 0 to 1 = 3 medals for the first 4 shards + 8 for the last shard = 20 medals ;
- Rank 1 to 2 = 8 medals for the first 4 shards + 18 for the last shard = 50 medals ;
- Rank 2 to 3 = 16 medals for the first 4 shards + 36 for the last shard = 100 medals ;
- Rank 3 to 4 = 25 medals for the first 4 shards + 50 for the last shard = 150 medals ;
- Rank 4 to 5 = 40 medals for the first 4 shards + 110 for the last shard = 270 medals ;
- Total = 600 medals.
Ranking up your hero is a key factor in making them significantly stronger. You gain a stat increase every shard obtained as well as powerful new ability boosts or passives on ranks 1, 3 and 5.
Back to Joséphine’s skills. Don’t forget to upgrade her signature skill like this Chapter asks us to do while we’re at it!
Commander skills are special skills that only activate for your commander in openfield. They don’t need to be leveled up manually since they level up automatically with the hero:
- Hero Lv.10: Commander skill Lv.10 ;
- Hero Lv.20: Commander skill Lv.15 ;
- Hero Lv.40: Commander skill Lv.20 ;
- Hero Lv.60: Commander skill Lv.25 ;
- Hero Lv.80: Commander skill Lv.30 ;
- Hero Lv.100: Commander skill Lv.35 ;
- Hero Lv.120: Commander skill Lv.40 (max).
Signature skills are powerful abilities unique to the selected hero and cannot be replaced. It usually is interesting to level up signature skills first, as they only require skill points unlike customizable skills which can also be upgraded using skill scrolls.
The 2 customizable skills are unlocked when a hero reaches Lv.25 and Lv.38 respectively and can be chosen from a range of 6 skills. Two epic skills are automatically unlocked when reaching Lv.38 but the legendary skills have to be unlocked using legendary skill medals which are obtainable either through bundles or through the items store. Let’s have a look at Joséphine’s skillset.
Having upgraded our Joséphine’s signature skill, let’s wrap up Chapter 3 and head to the next one.
Chapter 4 focuses on upgrading our town center, our walls and our hospital to be able to protect our Citadel with more efficiency and heal our wounded. Nothing we can’t do!
Let's use the building time from the town center to build our first quarry while we’re at it, and any missing farm. This leads us to queues management, accessible through our Citadel’s main menu at the left of our screen, represented by a hammer icon.
Just like your training queues, keep your builders busy and never leave your queues empty! Let’s start Chapter 5 once our town center is Lv.5.
Chapter 5 introduces us to the university and its economic and military trees. First, build and upgrade your university, it is a very important building to keep at max level whenever you can.
Select your university and check the military’s technology tree. It focuses mainly on upgrading your troops (attack, defense, health, training speed) and unlocking their tiers. It also is in the military section that you will be able to unlock more deployable heroes to add to your armies, up to 3 heroes per lineup.
The economy’s technology tree is also important. While it boosts your villagers’ passive resources production, it also increases your armies’ gathering capacity and speed in the openfield. More importantly, the economy section will allow you to increase your building and research speed by a significant amount. These are very important research to get to save time with your queues.
We can get a little bit ahead of the main storyline by unlocking the Trainee Swordsmen research, which allows us to access T2 troops. Once this is done, let’s head to Chapter 6.
Let’s follow our quests and upgrade our tavern. It is a very important building since it is where we will be able to recruit Heroes using legendary recruitment tokens.
While we’re talking about heroes, let’s mention another way to get heroes: the Legendary Advent. Go to your event center by selecting the calendar icon at the top right of your screen while in your Citadel’s main menu. You should see something like this:
Legendary Advent comes back every week with a new rotation of 2 heroes. This rotation includes the Hero Tribhuwana and the Hero Hannibal. I tried my luck with my free spins but didn’t unlock Tribhuwana, sadly. But a good advice is to spin until you reach 20 spins, then you can unlock a chest at the bottom right of the screen that will give you 10 Tribhuwana medals, ensuring her acquisition.
While we’re in the event center’s tab, let us look through the beginner events available to us. These are usually very interesting to grind for and are easy to complete as you progress into the game!
Simply log in every day for 7 days and get the Legendary Heroes Darius I and Hammurabi for free!
For the following event, simply recruit heroes at the tavern and get free rewards, including universal legendary medals to upgrade your Heroes’ stars, legendary scrolls, skills points, etc. Everything you need to empower your heroes.
Follow Age of Empires Mobile on social media and join our Discord server to chat with the community, be informed of the latest news and get rewards in-game. That will also give you the opportunity to participate in our community events!
File:Guide024.png File:Guide025.png
Now that Chapter 7 is unlocked, we can finally explore the world. Select the map icon at the bottom left of the screen to access the world map.
We should send Joan of Arc to this tier 3 food resource tile to gather its content.
Use Joséphine to defeat tribes, as she is our most powerful hero right now. Select the magnifying glass icon at the bottom left of your screen as shown above and let’s start hunting tribes.
Joséphine will easily be able to boot these tribes away from our mighty walls. Let us start by defeating Lv.1 tribes and try to increase their level until we are not able to defeat them anymore.
There is a reward every time you defeat a barbarian of a certain level for the first time.
The picture on the left displays the bonus rewards for defeating your first instance of Lv.1 common tribes.
It is also worth noting that you cannot auto field battle against tribes you have never defeated at least once.
I have managed to defeat common tribes up until Lv.9. Let’s try the auto field battle system to show you how this works and how to refill stamina while we’re at it. You get a free daily stamina supply worth 50 stamina every day. Make sure to use it!
Tap “Auto Field Battle” as shown in the previous picture.
Make sure your army is set up properly before sending it into the openfield. Tap the cogwheel icon next to your Joséphine army as shown in the picture above to check the lineups menu.
I suggest activating the auto replenish option, as your army will be refilled every time it gets back to your citadel after beating an enemy common tribe. Do not forget to check your hospital in your base as your troops get wounded as they fight your enemies.
We only have 3 armies for now with one hero in each of them, but this will change as we grow stronger and our citadel development progresses!
Chapter 8 introduces us to what is probably the heart of Age of Empires Mobile: alliances.
Indeed, alliances open the door to a significant part of the gameplay in Age of Empires Mobile, whether it’s related to events, exclusive technologies, the embassy and the alliance assists that come with it, the territory you and your allies will be able to build, or large-scale battles…
Let us select the “Alliance” tab that appeared at the bottom of your screen and choose an alliance of your liking. If you decided to start playing the game with friends, now would be a good time to reunite with them if they already have created an alliance.
Or, maybe it is the perfect opportunity you have always been waiting for, to create your own group of warriors and claim the throne of the Imperial City as you lead your fearless troops into the battlefields, crushing your enemies like wheat bending under the pouring rain?
Anyway, for the purpose of this guide and for this purpose only -this has absolutely nothing to do with our will to claim the Imperial Throne, we will create our own alliance. If you decide to do the same, choose a name to represent the grandeur of what will maybe become a beacon of strength, as well as a 3-letter tag (or abbreviation).
Once this is done, let us review the new alliance menu.
Regarding the alliance technologies, I suggest investing in the Politics tree first to increase the maximum member capacity of your alliance. More allies means more funds, more funds means more territory. Science is also mandatory for additional territory flags which you will be able to place on the world map to expand your influence.
Donating resources to your alliance is a win-win situation. You allow your alliance to unlock powerful technologies that will benefit both you and your allies, your alliance warehouse will gain precious alliance funds used to build territory and you will be rewarded with alliance coins which you can spend in the alliance store against various resources and speed-ups.
Here is what the alliance technology tree looks like and what categories you will find in it.
Once you are in an alliance, be sure to always use your donation attempts whenever you can. The game will remind you to do it once you have more than 10 out 20 attempts ready to be used.
Being in an alliance also opens the possibility to start and join alliance exclusive events, some of which are very rewarding. Some of these events require a Supply Depot, a building that leaders can build on the world map. Let’s see how to do it.
First, you need to build a stronghold in your alliance’s name on the world map. It is the epicenter of your territory. You need to have 5 members in your alliance and your total military power must be above 100.000 to unlock this building. Once it’s done, go to the world map.
Alliance resources like wood, food, stone and gold are gained passively on your alliance’s territory, where gathering camps are located. Alliance funds are obtained when your allies defeat common tribes or when they donate to alliance technologies.
Once your stronghold is built, you can build your Supply Depot anywhere on your territory as shown below.
Now that this is out of the way, let us learn what alliance events are available at this stage of the game.
First on the list is the Supplies Bounty event. Challenge fierce tribes with your armies through a total of 80 increasingly difficult battles.
Once you have defeated a level, you will start storing speed-ups and resources passively based on the latest completed challenge’s difficulty, up to a 12 hours passive storage capacity. Claim your rewards at the supply depot!
The second event is only available for a short period of time early on in the game: the Giant’s Roar.
During this event, common tribes you defeat on the map will give you this special event’s item: the giant’s treasure.
This item can be found in your inventory (“Others” tab, it looks like a banner). Note that they will not expire and stay in your inventory until used.
Use these unique banners to summon the giant legions near your Citadel, then start a rally against them and let your allies join you!
Not only will you win valuable rewards, your teammates will be rewarded too.
The most interesting rewards you will get from these battles are King Derrick medals. There is no limit to how many King Derrick medals you can get daily while using your banners, but allies can only get 30 legendary King Derrick medals per day while assisting you or any other alliance member.
The same goes for you, you are limited to 30 King Derrick medals per day while assisting your brothers-in-arms.
Do not miss out on this event as you will get a chance to rank King Derrick up to 5 stars! He is a very powerful hero that pairs well with many other heroes such as Miyamoto Musashi, Hammurabi or Tribhuwana.
Onto the third event: Trojan Turmoil.
This event can be done every 2 days and needs to be started by an alliance leader. It lasts for a total of 30 minutes.
Waves of 3 Trojan horses will appear near the supply depot. Every one of them will have a different unit type and military specialty weakness.
The example on the left shows a Trojan horse weak to Warrior armies (the red banner with the lion symbol) and weak to archers since it is full of swordsmen.
Tap the Trojan horse to start a rally. Each wave stays for 7min30 before giving way to the next wave automatically. Deal the maximum amount of damage with your alliance to get both personal and alliance rewards!
This event can help you win up to 2000 empire coins every 2 days, resources and blueprints used to upgrade your watchtowers. Do not miss it, empire coins are valuable rewards!
As a final note, do not forget to communicate with your alliance using the built-in chat at the bottom left of your screen. Say hello, create bonds and make friends out of all of these warriors who fight alongside you.
Your leaders may send alliance mails or communicate through your alliance Discord server to inform you of any war plans they may have, if they want to claim enemy territory for instance! It is important to grasp the social aspect of Age of Empires Mobile early on and to try and tame it to become a truly fearsome governor.
Onto Chapter 9!
Chapter 9 is pretty chill, it’s time to start getting into the habit of doing our daily quests, a really important part of the game, especially early on when you need every bit of resources you can get!
Let’s see what they are. To access your daily quests, check your quests interface on the left of your screen and do as follows:
You will then enter this menu:
Here are our tips to get 200 easy points:
- Perform the Legendary Arrival recruitment: go to your tavern and use the free pull to get heroes. 40 free points!
- Gather 50k resources at any resource point. 30 points.
- Defeat common tribes 10 times (and don’t forget your free daily stamina supply!). 30 points.
- Heal at the hospital once. Easy to do after your daily tribe beatings! 10 points.
- Train 1k units. 20 points.
- Pick up resources 5 times in the world at resource tiles. 30 points.
- Make 10 alliance technology donations. 20 points.
- Assist allies 20 times in the alliance. 30 points.
I feel like Dumbledore counting all these points, but if I’m not mistaken that makes 210 points, which means you should have unlocked all daily chests with that! It’s rather quick and easy to do daily.
Onto Chapter 10!
There’s nothing we didn’t learn how to do in Chapter 10, we’re getting the hang of it!
Still, we are tasked to use speed-ups, so before using any on either our research, buildings, training or healing, let’s see how many we have and how to get there.
First, select your inventory File:Guide044.png then select the File:Guide045.png icon at the top of your screen.
A menu should open where you can see your total resources on the left tab (including unused resource packages) and your total amount of speed-ups per category.
In this case, I have many training speed-ups, so let’s speed some troops up to wrap up Chapter 10! See you in Chapter 11!
Chapter 11’s quests are nothing new except for a daily minigame: seaside fishing.
Head to your Citadel’s coast and try to get the highest score possible to get free food as resources.
Fish once everyday to get that sweet food bonus!
Chapter 12 leads you closer to a Lv.10 town center. Closer to the Castle Age, and closer to having 2 heroes per army!
While our town center is being upgraded, it’s time to start progressing in another Expedition: the Military Exercise.
This Expedition is a collection of 50 stages where you get awesome completion rewards as well as exclusive tokens you can spend in the Military Exercise store. Each stage is unique and the boosts or losses you get will not remain once it is completed.
Progress tile by tile from left to right to complete a stage, going through different battles, supply points and strategy tiles where you will get temporary bonuses.
After playing for a few days, we got a bit ahead of the main storyline quests and upgraded our town center to Lv.12! With this, we can unlock our third unit tier through the university and its technologies. We also add a second hero in our armies, making them stronger altogether.
As a reminder, once our heroes are Lv.50, we unlock their military specialties and can pair heroes together based on them to get strong combination bonuses.
While our buildings are being upgraded and our troops are gathering resources, let us have a look at the last Expedition available to us: the Apex Arena.
It is a place where you can set up lineups to challenge other governors or get challenged yourself, increasing or decreasing your overall rank based on your win/loss ratio. Rewards are sent daily and weekly based on your score.
Before you can challenge any enemy, you need to set up your offensive and defensive lineups. Don’t forget to update them as you progress further into the game!
File:Guide054.png File:Guide055.png
At this point, you have been introduced to every main feature you can find early on and are ready to conquer the world and lead your alliance towards a glorious path.
If you ever decide to get a better head start by getting advantageous bundles, let us give you a sneak peak of some of them that are very valuable.
First, it is worth noting that Age of Empires Mobile has a VIP system which rewards you with passive bonuses, daily rewards and gives you access to a unique store, the VIP store. Select the store icon at the top of your screen, then scroll down until you find it. Higher VIP ranks gives you better bonuses, daily rewards as well as better items to buy in the VIP store.
Now, some interesting beginner bundles to get:
- The VIP 1 & 2 Exclusive bundles which you can find in the VIP menu shown above. This will unlock Miyamoto Musashi, a strong swordsman Warrior hero, and give you enough medals to upgrade him up to one star.
File:Guide057.png
File:Guide058.png
Miyamoto Musashi fits perfectly with Hammurabi and King Derrick, 2 early and easily obtainable heroes, as recommended by the game’s lineups tutorial.
- The Kingdom’s Hoard. It is a valuable store event that stays for a month. It works like a battle pass, with quests to complete daily, weekly and monthly, to progress and get levels (up to 80) in order to unlock rewards. While it is free, you can buy the Advanced version of the Kingdom’s Hoard to unlock formidable rewards that are usually hard to get.
- Monthly passes. 2 supply bundles that will give you rewards every day for a month.
- Daily special. A daily bundle that gives you universal speed-ups, empire coins, legendary medals exclusive to a hero of your choosing (Rani Dugavarti, Justinian the Great or Frederick Barbarossa) as well as a chance to get universal legendary medals and legendary skill scrolls.
- Top-Up Bonus. Age of Empires Mobile rewards you with a couple of free bundles depending on how many empire coins you have bought in-game throughout your progression. This event does not expire and includes different thresholds to reach in order to claim increasingly interesting gifts.

Your next major goal should be to lead your alliance to the Kingslands, the coveted battleground where only the most powerful alliances fight for control. Reaching this point is a crucial milestone and will test your coordination, strategy, and strength as an allied force.
- Reach for the Imperial City and the Crown
Once you’ve secured a foothold in the Kingslands, the ultimate challenge awaits: reaching the Imperial City. Whether it’s you or one of your allies, securing the Imperial City means the chance to claim the throne and become King. This requires not only military might but diplomacy and strategic alliances.
- The Path Forward
From here on, your main objective is to guide your alliance to glory. Expand your empire, protect your borders, and rise through the ranks to become a ruler of the land. The Castle Age is just the beginning of your civilization’s true power. Keep pushing forward, mastering new strategies and forging bonds with fellow governors.
Together, you and your allies will rise to challenge the world. Keep your sights set on the Imperial City, for that’s where legends are made. Who knows, once you’ve conquered it, you might turn your gaze and interest toward distant lands, waiting to be seized as well?
Good luck, Governor! Your empire’s destiny is in your hands.
